The holiday season often brings higher levels of anxiety, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Too many of us become incredibly stressed out during this time of year, leading to high levels of anxiety.

By following these tips, you can help reduce the anxiety in your life and maximize the odds of experiencing a truly enjoyable, low-anxiety holiday season.

Don’t overschedule

Remember you don’t have to do it all. Learn to say “no” when it comes to attending any event that you aren’t really excited about. If you’re feeling exhausted by numerous obligations, it’s time to take a break from the holiday madness by doing something for yourself that will help you feel reenergized, such as going for a walk, relaxing in a warm bath or reading a good book. This will help you to significantly reduce your anxiety, which means you’ll be much more productive for other activities.

Avoid overspending

Don’t spend so much money that you leave yourself swimming in financial anxiety. Set a reasonable budget that you can afford – the holidays shouldn’t be about expensive, extravagant gifts. It’s the thought that counts, not the price tag. Reducing financial stress is one of the best ways to decrease anxiety and actually have fun during the holiday season.

Reach out for support

If things are becoming overwhelming and your anxiety levels are peaking, find some support. Many people do not have close friends or family nearby and may need to seek out a support group, church organization or others within the community for help.

Remember, you’re not alone; there are lots of others in the same situation. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you have friends or family you can turn to, be sure to talk about how you’re feeling and don’t try to get through it all on your own.

Volunteer

Scheduling time to volunteer can help you to feel more engaged with your community and less isolated if you’re alone during the holiday season. Even if you aren’t, giving back tends to increase happiness and well-being, greatly decreasing anxiety. It can also help you to gain a new perspective on what’s really important in life.

Take care of your health

Don’t forget to take care of yourself during the holidays. Regular exercise serves as the best anti-anxiety medication available, without all of the side effects. Diet is also important. By choosing the right foods, you can drastically cut down on anxiety levels and even boost your mood. Include plenty of antioxidant-rich foods in your diet such as vividly colored fruits and vegetables.

jogLimit caffeine and alcohol intake and avoid processed foods including fast foods, fried foods and sugar which can all contribute to increased anxiety. Practicing stress reduction techniques like meditation can also be very beneficial to overall health and should help reduce anxiety.

By following these tips – and remembering to have fun and laugh now and again, it may help you to have the most enjoyable holiday season ever!
